Free Runners take me to the limit and beyond!
Free Running is a way of life!
I joined a group of free runners call Team Edge & their friends. Ages ranging from 16 - 20 years old and full of Free Running spirit.
Let's be honest, who would have thought that this 30 year, Executive Editor, father of 4 would of enjoyed 'jumping, rolling and doing cartwheels'?
...Well let me tell you that I've never felt so alive. Surprisingly the movements they showed me just felt really natural. Could it be my martial arts background or from my childhood years? I'm not sure but once they showed me what to do once, everything just seemed to click. It just felt like everything from my body to my mind was connected! I'm never going to let my surroundings limit my range of motion or the way I travel again. Free Running is not just an 'art' or 'sport', it's a way of life and getting from A to B has never been so liberating.
From the straight laced office worker, school boy to Bear Grylls, anyone can practice Free Running or it's counterpart Parkour. On the day I also met a real mix of Parkour & Free Run practitioners that had the same passion as all of the Team Edge members. Each of them had many different skill sets and wanted nothing more than to help each other and develop each other's abilities! Practitioners just randomly joined us and many new friendships and bonds were formed.
Passion, friendship, trust and the ability to connect any type of character and personality, mental focus, physical and mental confidence. The list of benefits and uses are never ending! Team Edge said that for a first timer I was really good. I personally think they we're being nice, in any case what made me do some of the extreme tricks they were doing was a mix of guts and pure stupidity! I'd advise you the readers to take your time and get good instruction. Luckily the boys knew what they were talking about and really tried to help me with all the movements.
Swollen Ankle, Cuts, bruises and 2 very sore (I need some ice) knees....
And do you know what? I'd do it again in a heartbeat... In fact I'll be bring you Pt.2 soon, in Team Edges home turf.
It's official, I have my first Free Running injury.
I have "Jumpers Knee", which is a Patella Tendon inflammation (ligament from Kneecap to Tibia bone). But I still don't care, as it was one of the most liberating experience I've ever had.
