Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, DJ Tina T headed out to Los Angeles after graduating from Washington State University, she made her first impression in Los Angeles becoming a finalist in the DJ battle hosted
by the #1 hip-hop radio station POWER 106 FM, and the world famous Big Boy in the Morning Show. But it was her victory as LA Weekly’s first ever DJ Spin Off battle that Tina T took home the gold.
With over 12 years of dues paid, Tina T has been able to seamlessly merge her underground hip-hop and turntablist background with the fast pace of mainstream pop, and the forward movement of the indie scene. Her versatility of pairing top 40, hip hop, 80’s Rock, house, and electro has allowed Tina's musical style to be defined simply by the audience she is playing for. This would explain why she has rocked crowds in some of the hottest nightclubs all over the world including the Bahamas, Philippines, Canada and Mexico.
She has toured all over the United States with such companies as Red Bull, Etnies, DC Shoes, Reebok, Skull Candy, Fox Racing, and Mountain Dew Action Sports. Tina T has held down residencies at some of the most famous Las Vegas nightclubs including Prive, Tao and Tao Beach, with headlining performances at Lavo, Pure, Rain, and Tabu. She's also DJ’d exclusive VIP private parties for the likes of Travis Pastrana, Rob Dyrdek, Lil Jon, and has shared the stage with such celebrities as Ludacris, Run DMC, Lady GaGa, Too Short, Black Eyed Peas, Sir Mix A Lot, Will I Am, DJ AM, Steve Aoki, and Samantha Ronson.
Tina has also been featured in Red Bull and DJ Hero commercials, MTV's The Hills, E! News, The Travel Channel, Fuel TV, among others. Along with her image and brand being plastered all over, the pairing of Tina’s skill behind the turntables, her flawless music programming, along with her overall persona, has proved her success thus far.
Currently, DJ Tina T is preparing for her passion project called "Camp Spin-Off" this summer on August 1st, 2010. This is a camp including celebrity DJ's that will help and inspire young teenagers to learn how to DJ. www.campspinoff.com
Do you have a natural drive to work out or is it something you have to push yourself to do
What are your favorite exercises and do you have any special training methods that you use?
How often do you workout?
What is your weekly routine?
Do you train any martial arts?
Do you all have any special diets?
What is your favorite Healthy Food(s)?
What supplements (if any) do you take? (protein, amino's etc)
What advice would you give our readers on keeping up with exercise while maintaining a demanding schedule?
Is there a sense of pressure for a female DJ to keep looking fit and in shape?
Do you have any “trick” exercises you do while on the road (i.e. In the car, hotel room, etc.)?
My sister inspired me to work out. She became a personal trainer and then started doing fitness competitions, so her routines kind of rubbed off on me when we lived together in college.
I have to force myself to go to the gym. I hate it, but am always happy I went.
I really like yoga. The stair stepper is one of my favorites to really break a sweat on.
It varies depending on my travel schedule, but usually 3-5 times a week.
I go to 24hr fitness most of the time and do 20 minutes of cardio on the stair master or alternating walking/running the treadmill at incline. I do abs during every workout and have my certain days
for arms and legs.
In Vegas i started going to Randy Couture's mixed martial arts gym: Extreme Couture. I really
got into the boxing classes, which is still the best work out I have had to this day. They don't mess
around over there!
I try to keep my diet lean and colorful. When i drink alcohol, i stay away from anything fruity because they contain so much sugar.
Sushi, protein shakes, fruit, salmon. The biggest challenge is finding heathy options in airports, but
now that Starbucks sells their "Perfect Oatmeal," its always a good option when traveling.
I drink protein shakes daily. Most of the time I walk to a place in Hollywood to get them from The Body Factory.
I am a big snacker and it will help you from gorging on huge meals when you don't eat all day. Finding healthy snacks to bring with you to work or on the road is key. I usually go to whole foods where they have an entire aisle with nutrition bars and go crazy.
Not necessarily, I don't think DJ's in general are really known for being the most healthy and fit people. Times are changing and overall people are taking better care of themselves, not just to look good, but to feel good and have enough energy to do what we do long term.
I came across a trainers youtube video called "hotel room workouts" and started to apply them while
on the road. I also travel with a work out band that i can do various strengthening excersises with
and it doesn't take up much room in my luggage. I always keep a foot bag in my luggage, its a fun
simple way to get some cardio in, especially if you have someone with you.
